Rosie CQ

I Know Rosie CQ through Cuchulain.  Rosie was in town with her husband, Haydn.  All three of us went out on the boat.  It was a clear August day, the lake was busy but not bustling and all afternoon float planes zoomed overhead.

Rosie is a percussionist.  Most folks bring a guitar out on the water so I always get a kick of something a bit different.  Her main instrument is the vibraphone.  This is a rather large, heavy and complex instrument, and while we could have gotten it on the boat, it's a bit involved to travel with.  Instead she chose to travel with the kalimba, which I think I first heard described as a finger piano.  It's a little box with little metal strips for keys on both sides. Both these instruments are 20th century versions of instruments that go back hundreds, and in the kalimbas case, thousands of years back to Africa.

We rowed around from spot to spot, finding the right light for mid day.  I loved the combination of sounds of Rosie’s voice, and the distinct sounds of that kalimba.  This might be the most practical tinyboatsession instrument I've ever had on the boat besides a harmonica.  It’s not quite pocket size, but it's close.  After some songs we rowed around and enjoyed each other's company and the perfect afternoon.  Her husband Hayden was funny and a lot of fun.  He also plays percussion but it's real estate now that keeps him busy.  Before we rowed in I got some cute photos of them. Instagram: @rosie.cq
