Red & the Revilers (Red & Nate)
Chickasaw Creek, Saraland, Alabama
I know Red & Nate from Johnny Hayes. These two are part of Red & the Revelers. I met them down by Red’s place in Chickasaw Creek just south of Saraland. This little stretch of water was delightful it was like some Venetian canals met up with American suburbs in the bayou. We rowed up and down the canals and since Red had a buddy at home we rowed right up to the edge of his backyard and played for him while he drank a beer in a lawn chair with his dog.
The only bad thing about Red and Nate in the boat was that the whole band couldn't come… and it's big–eight of them. Red and the Revelers have a full horn section and it’s a wall of soulful sound. If I ever get to film them again I'll have to find at least 3 more tinyboats to get the whole band in.
Red’s sound, without amps, was plenty to fill the night. In between songs, he talked about his voyage to performing music as a desire he felt later in life and he told me how that was a hard, good, and scary decision to follow a passion. It was undoubtedly a good thing, but that didn't mean it wasn't hard and full of all the reasons he shouldn't. He felt that so hard he’d written a song about it. Things are popping with Red and the Revelers and it was a good reminder that no one is going to chase your dreams but you.
