I know Julian because they are another musician that Halley Greg suggested I reach out to. Julian and I met out at Golden Gardens on what felt like one of the first days of fall. I love those days. An extra layer seemed like a luxurious relief after a long, hot summer. The wind rolled cobalt waves from the north and Julian sang once. We rowed into the marina and found some other fun background, and they sang twice. After that, we rowed past a plywood sea monster statue on a sea wall and I asked Julian came up with a tune about a sea monster.

In season four, I’ve experimented with asking musicians to come up with a song about something we see while on the boat. It’s fun to play around with the environment. Often the musicians are strumming or jamming anyway and asking them to come up with a song is a beautiful insight into what coming up with a song looks like. Julian came up with a beautiful song about a sea monster that might not be a monster after all. Maybe if we all tried to understand our monsters, be they sea, land, or inside ourselves, then maybe we might find something beautiful and useful along that journey.  -Jordan and Clarabelle
