HiDef, DJ Ready Rock & MistaEpik
Season 3, Sausalito Beach & Season 7 , Port of Oakland
I know Hi-Def and DJ Ready Rock from Season 3. For their jam in Season 7, they brought MistaEpik. I met them through Hi-Def’s sister, Alexandra, who also sang in Season 3 in Santa Barbara. When I first spoke with Hi-Def we had talked about how cool it would be to tinyboatsession out in front of the large white cranes in the Port of Oakland for a background. Unfortunately, I wasn't traveling with my own boat for season three, so the boat I found was in Sausalito. they laid down with DJ Ready Rocked the boat on the turntables and Hi-Def spit rhymes fresh out the oyster.
I knew if I headed through here again I'd give them a call. Now that I was traveling with CLARABELLE I could get into any waterway I wanted to and we could get the port of Oakland Cranes in the background. Hi-def and DJ Ready Rock were stoked. They guys showed up with another hip-hop artist, MistaEpik, and a massive speaker. There was plenty of room in the back for the three of them. The speaker wouldn't fit and we couldn't keep it on shore so I tied it to the bow of the boat.
We rowed out to the port. The cranes looked a lot like the AT-AT walkers from the Empire Strikes Back. Legend has it that they were the inspiration but it turns out that's a myth, but it's easy to see the resemblance. Wakes rolled. beats dipped. Oars slapped. After we recorded a few songs I let them go off on freestyle and they went on about the life, that fresh out the oyster, tinyboat life.
It is the best life.
SEASON 3 INTRO: I met HiDef and DJ Ready Rock through Alexandra. HiDef is Alexandra's younger brother. He is a rapper. So I reached out to Hidef, who, after a few exchanges via text, said, “Actually, my name is Harrison.” He asked if he could bring his DJ buddy, DJ Ready Rock, who actually... I still only know as DJ-Ready Rock. The answer to his question was "Yes!" The next question was, "How will we power it?" I have a large battery that I travel with for laptops and phones. I was not sure how long it would power large speakers. Worst case, Hidef would freestyle, best case... we'd drop beats like anchors.
It was looking like it might rain. Harrison "Hidef" and DJ Ready Rock showed up with a speaker the size 4th grader, turntables, and a laptop. Tentatively we set up the equipment. DJ Ready Rock handed me the power cord. The three of us exchanged glances. I plugged it in. The turntables lit up, and with that, the flow got floating with a tinyboatsession sound I'd describe as "fresh out the oyster." -Jordan & Clarabelle
