Dayna and Robert of

Lulu & the Broadsides

Bayou St. John, New Orleans

I met Dayna and Robert through April Goltz.  April and I met at a backyard musical fundraiser for a lost canoe.   She’s got a vast amount of musical knowledge and connections from deserts to bayous to the Midwest and the East Coast.  She liked this idea and made some introductions.

Dayna’s band is ‘Lulu and the Broadsides’ and she brought her bandmate Robert Mache (pronounced like ‘paper mache).  They were busy getting ready for the almost back-to-back French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest but made some time to meet me at Bayou St. John.  We skirted some light sprinkles and found a bit of quiet behind Demourelles Island.

I get to know people while I row around looking for the right background.  I found out Dayna and Robert don’t live here full time, but are woven into the city’s musical fabric over decades.  This really stuck me when they played the song ‘Rachel Carson.’  Though my history with the city was from a brief visit by rowboat and this three-month exploration I’d already felt a developing over for the city.  When Dayna sang, “if we lose New Orleans, we lose everything,” I wept. luluandthebroadsides.com
